Over the past several years, Nissan has become known as one of the auto market’s foremost leaders in innovation in sustainability, thanks in large part to the success of the Nissan LEAF. However, it’s not only automobiles that benefit from Nissan’s commitment to innovation, as St. Petersburg, Florida recently saw a major upgrade in its harbors in the form of a Nissan-designed car carrier, built with much of the same sustainable technology as the Nissan LEAF.

The vessel, dubbed “The City of St. Petersburg,” is a 21,000-ton car carrier that is able to transport up to 2,000 vehicles across the water at a time. With this project, Nissan saw a unique opportunity to extend its environmentally conscious mindset far beyond the auto market. Until now, “green” technology hasn’t been nearly as large of a focus in the aquatic transportation industry, particularly in terms of delivery and auto transport.

The City of St. Petersburg is run by a 24-person crew and travels at an average speed of approximately 17 knots (which equals about 20 miles per hour). The carrier will navigate the bitter North Atlantic, with the main purpose of delivering Nissan vehicles to Northern Europe and Russia from Nissan factories in the United Kingdom and Spain. It is a harsh journey, but the semispherical prow of the carrier and the sustainable energy the ship runs on are more than enough to take quite a bit of the bite out of the trip.

The ship is about as long as one and a half football fields, coming in at 140 meters. It is 22 meters wide, with a draught of 6.9 meters.

The Nissan team is quite excited about the achievement it has accomplished with the City of St. Petersburg, and its completion opens up a vast new area of business for the company. Building great vehicles is extremely satisfying, but Nissan knows that what’s even more important is the ability to help build communities. With that mindset, Nissan has paired with Habitat for Humanity to help create affordable housing in communities all across the United States. Through active promoting of volunteerism and the funding of home building projects, Nissan is focused on dramatically improving the quality of life across the country.

Nissan’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity began over six years ago in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Originally, the company began with an annual donation of $1 million, but by last year, it had added an additional $1.5 million to help support sustainable building, training and awareness in the area.

Besides financial and promotional support, Nissan also gives aid in the form of its own vehicles. Disaster relief efforts resulted in the donation of 50 Nissan Titan trucks, which comes in at a value of over $1 million. These trucks helped to support rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast region after all of the hurricane devastation. So far, the company has donated 104 vehicles to Habitat for Humanity.

Nissan’s donations, both financial and in vehicle form, will now be used to help construct homes in Liberty City, one of the most poverty-stricken urban areas of Miami, as a part of Habitat for Humanity’s Liberty City Shine campaign. Over the scheduled three-year project, Nissan and Miami Habitat will work together to help to build and refurbish over 250 homes in what was once a thriving community. The ultimate goal is to improve the living conditions and the sense of pride in the neighborhood.

Overall, Nissan has donated over $7.5 million in grant money and donations, and over 5,000 Nissan team members have volunteered with various Habitat for Humanity chapters across the country. Nissan has even sponsored 50 homes in six years, and looks to increase that total as the partnership continues.

  • Tires. The tires are one of the most important elements of a vehicle. Always check for signs of wear. If they look to be wearing out, it’s time to get them replaced.
  • Motor oil. For the best results, you should get an oil change every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first. Be sure to add in a filter change as well! Regular oil changes will save you from having to make costly engine repairs later on.
