2011 Hyundai Sonata Named IIHS Top Safety Pick

Jul 16, 2010

Turn your radio on while driving down the highway or flip through the stations on your digital cable while waiting for your favorite show. What can happen between both of these scenarios? You have the chance to hear or see a commercial talking about the Hyundai Sonata of course. Everyone knows what a Sonata is, the commercials air all over and you could not go 24 hours without hearing of this midsized car, but what’s so important ask?

This seems to be the question on the minds of millions and it’s very simple. This car is the newly named Safety Pick for 2011. If you are reading this now and unaware of what this means for a car let us take the time to better explain this. The IIHS is the Insurance of Highway Safety, this being the non-profit organization which is dedicated to making sure they are able to reduce the loss of injuries and deaths (besides property damage) for all of our nation’s highways.  The IIHS is working every year to make sure the autos that we drive on the roads are able to keep us safe, it’s that simple.

Right now when you see the 2011 Hyundai Sonata you are looking at something that seems far from the average midsized vehicle. This car is beautiful, sleek and powerful but best of all – it’s safe. Are you aware that the body is made of high strength steel, or that it has six airbags along with side airbags?

Only an auto which is able to pass with the highest rating within all four of the Institutes’ tests would be able to be picked Top Safety by the Institute for Highway Safety. If a vehicle is unable to meet “good” for all marks between the front, rear side and roller over tests it would not end up being picked. As well the IIHS has also added a new regulation for the roof strengths of autos to be twice as stringent compared to those federal regulations in the past.

Safety is important from all angles and for all people. Car safety does not define us between being single, married or divorced – we all want to be safe in the vehicles we drive and those vehicles around us when we are on the roads. Part of the reason the Sonata has been added into this safe list is that they have gone above and beyond what many have attempted in making the ultimate safe car. For this IIHS has awarded them as the Top Safety Pick and with only 32 other vehicles on this list you can understand why it’s such a big deal.

The celebrating will continue as they continue to improve on the small things that some of us never think about on a daily basis. For Hyundai it is a winning year and also a time to record this within the history books as this is the first time the Sonata has earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
