2010 Hyundai Genesis vs. 2010 Volvo S80

So it is time to buy a new car again. You think that you want something a bit more luxurious than the usual fleets of Camrys, Accords, and the like out there. However, you still want the feel of a 4 door sedan, just something a bit more sporty. A vehicle that has the utility of a sedan, but the strength and the soul of a sports car. You are thinking of a particular pair, the Volvo S80 and the Hyundai Genesis. How do they stack up?

Well, in some ways, the vehicles are pretty similar. For instance, they put around the same amount of torque, 325 for the S80 and 333 for the Genesis. They have around the same volume in the trunk, as well, 14.9 cubic feet for the S80 and 15.9 cubic feet for the Genesis. Both cars have power and manual sun roofs, standard. And both have plenty of luxurious features standard, such as real leather steering wheel covers, navigation systems, and radio and CD players.

However, once you get past the similarities in the two vehicles, there are some striking differences as well. In this comparison, the vehicle models looked at were the S80 V8 AWD and the Genesis 4.6L, to compare the most powerful engine models of both vehicles, and even then, it is really no contest. The Genesis 4.6L V8 engine pumps out significantly more horsepower than the 4.4L V8 engine on the S80. Very significant, in fact – the Genesis is fueled by 375 horses, while the S80′s most powerful engine only brings 311 to the table. While the S80 does have AWD functionality, it is positively eclipsed by the sheer power of the engine on the Genesis.

There are some other very significant differences as well, including in the optional interior luxuries. For instance, the Genesis comes standard with better leg, hip, head, and shoulder room in all but two categories between the two – and even where the S80 has the advantage, it is by a very paltry amount. These two are rear hip room, where it has a tiny .4 inch greater width, and in front head room, a nearly-as-small .6 inch greater height. The Genesis also boasts a better warranty, going for twice as long on powertrain warranty, and a lifetime rust warranty. The biggest difference, however, is in price. For the S80 as compared here? $50,950. And the Genesis? $39,500. A difference of more than $10,000 is pretty significant.
